Issued by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Cape Town (PSC)
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Cape Town, unequivocally condemns the recent bomb
threat made against Al-Azhar Mosque in District Six, accompanied by threats of violence
directed at its worshippers. These acts are a direct attack on the sanctity and safety of places
of worship and form part of a disturbing trend aimed at intimidating and silencing those who
stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and speak out against the ongoing genocide in
Gaza.
We call on the South African Police Services (SAPS)—from its highest structures, including
the Provincial Commissioner of Police and the Provincial Disaster Risk Management units—
as well as the City of Cape Town, through its municipal police and law enforcement agencies,
to ensure the immediate protection of all individuals who are at risk and under threat. This
threat must be investigated without delay, and urgent, comprehensive measures must be
implemented to protect our communities. The same level of urgency, seriousness, and care
afforded to other parts of society must be applied here. We demand full cooperation, active
monitoring, and regular feedback from all relevant authorities.
We further call on the Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis; the Mayoral Committee
Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith; and the Premier of the Western Cape
Government, Alan Winde, to take concrete action to ensure the safety of all places of
worship. We urge them to publicly condemn these threats and clearly denounce the
intimidation of pro-Palestinian voices in our city.
The absence of an adequate response from the City and the Western Cape Provincial
Government stands in stark contrast to their rapid reaction to the recent false flag bomb
scare on Hatfield Street—an incident amplified by Zionist atrocity propagandists who
continue to fuel Islamophobia, antisemitism, and apartheid-style racist supremacy. The PSC notes with deep concern the Western Cape government’s ongoing pro-Israel stance,
which is in direct contradiction to the overwhelming support for Palestine shown by the
majority of South Africans and echoed by our national government. While the national
government has consistently condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for a ceasefire
and humanitarian access, the DA-led Western Cape administration has failed to denounce
the atrocities committed against Palestinians—thus undermining urgent calls for justice and
accountability.
We are further alarmed by reports that during pro-Palestinian events in Cape Town, SAPS
has adopted an aggressive stance towards peaceful demonstrators, while appearing to offer
protection to pro-Israel groups. This clear double standard not only undermines the
constitutional right to peaceful protest but also erodes public trust in the impartiality of law
enforcement.
Places of worship must remain sanctuaries of peace—free from threats, fear, and political
intimidation. We call on all community leaders, public officials, and law enforcement
agencies to work together to safeguard these spaces and to uphold the constitutional rights
of all South Africans, including freedom of expression, belief, and assembly.
The PSC stands in full solidarity with Al-Azhar Mosque and all those targeted for their
principled support of Palestine. We will not be silenced in our call for justice, peace, and an
end to the genocide and collective punishment in Gaza.
