The Media Review Network (MRN) strongly condemns the recent decision by the Department of Home Affairs to suspend the 90-day visa exemption for Palestinian passport holders.
This abrupt policy shift is deeply troubling and unjust, as it disproportionately targets an already vulnerable community facing immense ‘Israeli’ orchestrated hardships under ongoing occupation, genocide and humanitarian crises.
Reports suggest that this decision is linked to unverified claims regarding chartered flights allegedly carrying Palestinian nationals.
Such speculation, without credible evidence, cannot justify punitive measures that undermine South Africa’s long-standing commitment to justice and human rights.
By acting on ‘Israeli’ fear-driven narratives, the Department risks fueling xenophobic sentiments and perpetuating discriminatory practices reminiscent of apartheid-era restrictions.
South Africa’s moral and historical obligation is clear: we must stand in solidarity with oppressed peoples, as enshrined in our Constitution and reflected in our liberation struggle.
Palestinians have consistently looked to South Africa as a beacon of hope and ally in their quest for freedom and dignity from Zionist settler colonialism.
To now impose barriers that isolate them further is not only a betrayal of these principles but also a dangerous precedent that erodes our international reputation as a champion of human rights.
The MRN calls on the DHA to immediately reverse this decision and reaffirm South Africa’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people.
We urge government officials to engage constructively with solidarity organisations to address any legitimate concerns without resorting to blanket punitive measures.
In these times of global uncertainty, South Africa must resist ‘Israeli’ fear-based policies and uphold its legacy of justice, equality, and solidarity.
The Palestinian struggle is not a distant episodic issue, rather it is a reminder of our own history and the universal fight against oppression.
We must not allow fear and misinformation to dictate policy at the expense of humanity.
